Mentoring

Friends Indeed Mentoring Program

Friends Indeed mentors youth in Charles and Lower Prince Georges Counties from ages 4-15 who have a parent in prison or under court supervision.

Mentoring is proven to be one of the best ways to help children and teens resist negative decision-making in favor of making positive life choices for themselves.

Mentoring...

  • Helps adolescents develop job readiness and life skills
  • Develops self esteem
  • Develops academic and interpersonal skills
  • Children with Mentors are:
  • 46% less likely to start using drugs
  • 27% less likely to start using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • 33% less likely to hit someone
  • Mentor's Responsibilities:
  • Meet with your mentee for at least one hour each week for one year
  • Keep a journal record of each visit or call to your mentee
  • Assist your mentee in setting and reaching attainable goals
  • Report progress to the Program Coordinator each month
  • Chaperone prison visits every other month with parent or guardian's permission
  • Attend quarterly program-wide events with your mentee
  • Participate in initial and quarterly training opportunities

Skill Required to be a Mentor:

  • Be a good listener
  • Believe in the potential of young people
  • Be patient, flexible and encouraging
  • Have a good sense of humor
  • Be consistent
  • Consent to a background check

How to become a mentor:

  • If you are 21 years or older
  • Willing to be a friend and role model (not a counselor or substitute parent)
