The Arc Baltimore positions on issues before the 2011 Maryland General Assembly are outlined in the attached Arc of Maryland public policy platform. Some of the current activity in support of the platform follows below.
- SB168 - The Lorraine Sheehan Health and Community Services Act of 2011 (more commonly referred to as the alcohol tax bill) was heard on Wednesday, February 23rd in the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee. Carol Fried, Vice-President and Governmental Affairs Chair of The Arc of Maryland and many others testified in support of the bill, stressing the urgent need for additional revenue to address the needs of those on the waiting list and also to begin to address the significant underfunding of the provider agencies.
- State Budget Includes Transitioning Youth Funding. See the Developmental Disabilities Coalition fact sheet on this as well as other budget detail regarding emergency placements, the Waiting List equity fund and other funding issues.
- DD Day Advocates Raise their Voices in Annapolis - 10 cents Makes Sense Hundreds of advocates from around the state joined in the February 11th Developmental Disabilities in Annapolis to support the dime a drink alcohol tax and other policy and budgetary issues that affect the disability community. Take a look at some memorable photos from the day.
- Town Halls Lay Out Changes to the Waiting List - Registry & Appeal Processes are New. The Arc Baltimore hosted two Town Halls recently with presentations that led to a great deal of questions and answers. While the attached materials offer some guidance and clarification on the new lists, there will likely be more to come.
